house democrat accuses colleagues of leading reconnaissance tour of capitol day before attack

A House Democrat claimed lawmakers in Congress led groups of people on a “reconnaissance” tour through the U.S. Capitol, the day before a mob of President Trump’s supporters besieged the building.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey said in a Facebook livestream that her elected colleagues appeared to have attempted to aid Trump in overturning the election results by assisting would-be rioters in getting a lay of the land ahead of Jan. 6.

“Not only do I intend to see that the president is removed and never runs for office again and doesn’t have access to classified material,” Sherill said on Tuesday. “I also intend to see the those members of Congress that abetted him, those members of Congress who had groups coming through the Capitol that I saw on Jan. 5th, a reconnaissance for the next day, those members of Congress that incited this violent crowd, those members of Congress that attempted to help our president undermine our democracy, I’m going to see that they’re held accountable and if necessary, ensure that they don’t serve in Congress.”

While she said she could not confirm if the people on the tours were involved in last Wednesday’s attack on the Capitol, Sherrill went further, calling for justice if law enforcement and others responsible for protecting members of Congress contributed to the riot or assisted lawbreakers in any fashion.

“We can’t have a democracy if too many members of our police and our military are acting to over turn it and undermine it,” she said.

The claim comes days after House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina said he believed “something else was going on here” after learning Trump supporters passed up his highly visible office door to go inside a different room that is not easy to find.

“My office, if you don’t know where it is, you ain’t going to find it by accident,” Clyburn told SiriusXM’s The Joe Madison Show on Friday. “And the one place where my name is on the door, that office is right on Statuary Hall. They didn’t touch that door, but they went into that other place where I do most of my work. They showed up there harassing my staff.”

“How did they know to go there? How come they didn’t go where my name was? They went where you won’t find my name, but they found where I was supposed to be,” Clyburn said. “Something else was going on untoward here.”

Videos of the attack show hundreds of rioters drifting through the Capitol, including through Statuary Hall, while thousands more remained outside. Top House and Senate leaders have separate offices inside the Capitol. Those who trespassed into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office left it “ransacked,” Clyburn said.
