‘Just so angry right now’: Teenage daughter of radio host Rickey Smiley shot over holiday weekend
The teenage daughter of a black comedian and radio personality was shot in Houston over the holiday weekend and is expected to recover.
Police said three men were waiting at a traffic light at 6898 South Freeway on the city’s southwest side Sunday night when an unknown vehicle passed them. The occupants of the vehicle began shooting multiple times, wounding the three men and a female passenger in an unrelated vehicle.
No arrests have been made as of Tuesday morning.
Radio host Rickey Smiley confirmed Tuesday that the woman was his 19-year-old daughter.
“She’s fine. I’m just so angry right now,” Smiley said on his show.
In separate Instagram posts, Smiley explained that he was not able to see his daughter in the hospital due to coronavirus pandemic concerns.
“Trying to pack a bag. Don’t know what to pack. Can’t think straight. Nerves bad, butterflies in my stomach,” he said. “My daughter in surgery. Can’t even get to her. … I don’t know what to do. We got to stop gun violence. Parents shouldn’t have to go through this.”
In social media posts of her own, Smiley’s daughter called the incident “the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me.”
“I won’t be out of the hospital for a while nor will i be able to walk for a while due to nerve damage,” she wrote. “I’m so sorry if i can’t respond to everyone but please know i’m thankful for all of the messages.”
