In a statement posted by White House deputy chief of staff for communications Dan Scavino early Thursday morning, President Donald Trump acknowledged that Joe Biden will be the next president and pledged to have “an orderly transition” come inauguration day.

Over mounting allegations of fraud, Trump had yet to concede the election and continued to pressure his base to fight the results leading up to his statement, which came shortly after the certification of the electoral college vote Thursday.

“Even thought I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” the statement read. “I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”

Trump’s Twitter had been shut down late Thursday afternoon amid chaos at the U.S. Capitol as many rioters breached the building and attacked Capitol police. He delivered the message via Scavino for that reason.

As the mob descended on the Capitol, Trump asked his supporters “to remain peaceful.”
